While egg crepes with bacon, hot dogs, or fried dough sticks are everyday fare, one filled with zongzi? That’s pretty unusual. Located in Kaohsiung City, Egg Crepe King not only serves typical breakfast shop offerings like hamburgers and sandwiches but also features a range of uniquely flavored creative egg crepes—such as chocolate banana, salted egg meat, kimchi meat, spicy stir-fried rice cake with cheese, and taiyaki egg crepes. The standout and fan-favorite is the zongzi egg crepe, which becomes a tasty dish when topped with soy sauce paste and peanut powder.
Egg Crepe King was founded seven years ago by Lu Yijia. Coming from a family that originally ran a breakfast shop and encouraged by a pastor who motivated young people to start businesses, Lu wondered, “Does an egg crepe have to be eaten only in the morning? Can’t it be enjoyed in the afternoon or evening too?” With a bit of adventurous spirit, he started with a food cart, offering various egg crepes and operating only from noon onward. It’s only in the past year that he opened a physical store, now open from 12 PM to 7 PM.

So how did the signature zongzi egg crepe come about? Lu Yijia shared that while helping out at his family’s breakfast shop, an elderly regular complained of getting bored with regular breakfasts and asked if there was something different. On a whim, Lu stuffed a zongzi into an egg crepe. Surprisingly, the customer loved it so much that he ate it for seven days straight and even suggested seriously that the “zongzi egg crepe” should go on the menu. Though initially skeptical, Lu decided to include it when he started his own business—and it became an instant hit. He noted that while both his family’s shop and Egg Crepe King serve the zongzi egg crepe, the flavors differ slightly, as the sauces at Egg Crepe King are all custom-mixed.
Beyond the zongzi egg crepe, the shop also offers chocolate banana, salted egg meat, kimchi meat, spicy stir-fried rice cake with cheese, and taiyaki egg crepes. Lu said these creative crepes were brainstormed with church friends, though customers have also contributed ideas—someone even suggested combining them with ice cream, which they experimented with. Recently, Lu has been experimenting with wrapping sweet rice cakes and savory radish cakes along with cheese in an egg crepe, which has turned out quite well. There’s also a savory marshmallow egg crepe in development, with plans to launch both new flavors soon.
