The Black-faced Spoonbills are here!“Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season” kicks off in Tainan this October

Migratory bird season is here. To promote ecological conservation and environmental education in national parks, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters stated that during the migratory bird season,it will organize a six-month-long series of events titled the “Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season.”According to the Ministry of the Interior’s Construction and Planning Agency, the “Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season Kick-off Expo” will open on the 26th. The expo includes interactive games, eco-themed stage plays, DIY workshops, static exhibitions, dynamic interpretation by junior guides, and prize-winning quizzes, as well as recognizing outstanding volunteers of Taijiang National Park.

Taijiang National Park boasts a diverse range of wetland ecosystems and lies along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, which means that every autumn and winter, tens of thousands of migratory birds pass through or come to Taiwan for the winter. Among them, the globally endangered Black-faced Spoonbill flies away from its cold northern habitats to warmer southern wintering grounds, arriving in Taiwan around the Mid-Autumn Festival for approximately six months.

Following the lively opening of the kick-off expo,the “Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season”will run from October 2015 to March 2016,with two series of activities held each month. These span a wide range of themes and are divided into six main categories: “Exploring Taijiang,” “Fond Memories of Taijiang,” “Wandering Through Taijiang,” “Crafting in Taijiang,” “Tales from Taijiang,” and “Playtime in Taijiang.”

These activities will take participants on journeys through the microcosmic paradise of tidal flats, winter birdwatching, traditional Minnan cultural experiences, boat trails showcasing Taijiang’s aquaculture industry, cycling along the Zhubangang Creek, lessons in the salt pans, eco-talks by notable figures, family visits to historic battlefields in Taijiang, parent-child explorations along the Yanqi Creek, and bidding farewell to returning migratory birds, among many other diverse programs.
