Daily limit for individual Mainland Chinese tourists raised to 5,000; Golden Week holiday brings crowds

According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Interior, based on Article 4, Paragraph 1 of the "Regulations Governing Mainland Residents’ Entry into Taiwan for Tourism Purposes," adjustments will be made today (September 21) to several items related to individual travel by Mainland Chinese tourists to Taiwan, increasing the daily quota from 4,000 to 5,000.

The Ministry of the Interior announced that starting September 21, the daily quota for processing individual Mainland Chinese tourist applications on weekdays will be 7,300, with an average daily figure of 5,000. Since the opening of Mainland Chinese tourism to Taiwan in 2008, the number of Mainland cities permitted to allow free independent travel to Taiwan has reached 47, and there are now over 50 direct cross-strait flight routes. Travel industry insiders speculate that with the increase in the quota, coupled with the upcoming Golden Week holiday, more Mainland backpackers are expected to visit Taiwan, benefiting businesses in the food and accommodation sectors.
