Japan’s “Universal Studios Ocean Park” to Open in Okinawa in 2020

With its white clouds, blue skies, and seas, Okinawa—rich in natural resources—has long been a popular travel destination for both domestic and international visitors.Now there's another reason to visit—the second Universal Studios theme park in Japan will be built in Okinawa and will incorporate ocean park elements, with plans to open in 2020 alongside the Tokyo Olympics..

Unlike Osaka’s Universal Studios, which is themed around movies and animation, the Okinawa Universal Studios will not focus on films but will integrate the region’s natural landscapes to create a brand-new concept for a Universal Studios park.

According to Universal Studios’ plans, the tentative site for the Okinawa park is the Okinawa Zoo & Museum in Nago City. In addition to a land-based theme park, the project will also adopt a concept similar to DisneySea by developing a “Universal Studios Ocean Park,” with completion targeted for 2020 and a grand opening planned no later than the Tokyo Olympics.
