The Site of Liuzhou City

The Site of Liuzhou City is situated southeast of Baziwā Natural Village in Haicheng Town, about 2.5 kilometers from Haicheng Town. It was first constructed during the Song Dynasty. After the Western Xia occupied the Haoyuan region, it was called “Dongmou Hui,” and a military garrison known as the “Tiandu Military Command” was stationed within the city with a strong military presence. The city was originally located on the site of present-day Haicheng. In the 14th year of the Qianlong reign (1749), due to factors such as the need for easier access to water, the settlement was relocated five li away, where the fort was rebuilt as a proper city (the current site of Haichuan County). Liuzhou City was then abandoned.
The site is rectangular in shape, measuring 1,300 meters in length and 550 meters in width, with remaining walls standing 4–7 meters high. The base of the wall is 7 meters thick, and the top is 1–3 meters wide at the remaining parts. There were gates on the south and north sides, surrounded by city walls, and an outer moat approximately 8 meters wide.
The site collapsed during the 1920 Haiyuan Earthquake.
The Site of Liuzhou City is now a key cultural heritage site under the protection of Ningxia Autonomous Region.
