Former Site of the Red Twenty-Fifth Army Headquarters

The former site of the Red Twenty-Fifth Army Headquarters is located in Hongshiyan Village, Huayang Town, Yang County, Hanzhong City. On March 8, 1935, the Red Twenty-Fifth Army, led by Commander Cheng Zihua, Deputy Commander Xu Haidong, Political Commissar Wu Huanzhong, and Director of the Political Department Zheng Weisan, marched northward from the Eyuwan Base Area to resist Japanese aggression. On their way, they passed through Yang County and stationed in Huayang. The army headquarters was set up in the Yu Family Courtyard in Hongshiyan Village, 5 kilometers from Huayang Town. The army leadership stayed within the headquarters. During the Red Twenty-Fifth Army’s stay in Huayang, this place became the military and political center of the Huayang Soviet Area. At that time, the Yu Family Courtyard consisted of two large compounds with 65 rooms, making it a grand complex. After the Red Twenty-Fifth Army left Huayang and the guerrilla forces suffered setbacks, the Yu Family Courtyard was demolished and damaged by the Nationalist “encirclement and suppression” troops.
After the liberation, the Party and the government actively protected the site. Currently, there are 11 rooms remaining in two large courtyards and 44 ancient cypress trees. It is an important modern revolutionary historical site and representative architecture, and is a key cultural relics protection unit in Shaanxi Province. Over 100 weapons such as knives and guns used by the Red Army at that time, as well as slogans written by the Red Army and some other items, are preserved here. It is also a key patriotic education base in Hanzhong City.
