Portsmouth was the departure point for the Normandy landings during World War II. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bernard Law Montgomery set up the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force in the northern part of the city, and the site has been preserved for visitors. The city also hosts the D-Day Museum. The Spinnaker Tower, standing at 170 meters, is Portsmouth’s most iconic landmark, enhancing the seaside scenery and serving as a unique “window on the sea.” Some of the city’s main attractions are tied to its military history, including the D-Day Museum, the Royal Navy Museum, and Southsea Castle.
Portsmouth Cathedral is the most important cathedral of the Diocese of Portsmouth. It has witnessed war, peace, and famous weddings, was bombed and later rebuilt, and remains a spiritual sanctuary for local residents.
