Tongnan Grand Buddha Temple Scenic Area

The Grand Buddha Temple Scenic Area is located at the northern foot of Dingming Mountain on the western outskirts of Tongnan City, on the south bank of the Fu River. The site preserves 126 niches with 928 Buddhist and Taoist cliff carvings from the Sui, Tang, Song, Ming, Qing, and Republican periods, along with 87 inscribed stelae and poetic inscriptions carved by scholars and literati throughout the dynasties, and 31 carving and inscription records. There are also 21 couplets in various calligraphic styles. Highlights include the world’s largest indoor gilded Buddha statue, the “Seven-Eave Buddha Pavilion” — an ancient building that was one of the first to feature an all-glazed roof, the “Stone Staircase Musical Sound” — one of China’s four great ancient echo architectures, the nation’s largest “Sky-Supporting Buddha Character,” the rare natural echo wall “Sea Tide Sound,” as well as eighteen scenic wonders: “Autumn Moon over Emerald Screen,” “Yellow Silk Canopy,” “Hand-in-Hand Stone Peak,” “Hundred Immortals Cliff,” “Mirror Pavilion,” “Thousand Buddha Cliff,” “Fairy Cave,” “Reading Platform,” “Auspicious Lotus Pond,” “Eagle-Frog Rock,” “Saber Rock,” “Cloud Cliff Flying Glow,” and more.
