Gadong Zhuopeilin Monastery
Situated within Dingri County in Shigatse, the monastery is located at the sacred Labuqi Mountain. It was established by a high-ranking monk of the Zhigong Kagyu sect. During the time when the Red Hat lineage Karmar Choeying served as abbot, the monastery was expanded and converted to the Kagyu sect. Later, during the era of the Fifth Dalai Lama, it switched to the Gelug sect. Major structures include the Lhakhang (main hall), Tsekhang, and Dukhang. The Lhakhang enshrines the clay statue of “Tongwa Donden,” made from the ashes of Jetsun Milarepa mixed with his nasal blood by Rechungpa, along with statues of successive Kagyu lineage masters. Behind the monastery lies the Ox Tongue Cave (Zhiji Pu), which features an ox tongue-shaped protruding rock. This cave is the sacred site where Milarepa attained parinirvana.
