   Mandalay Hill
Mandalay Hill is located in the northeast corner of Mandalay City, with an elevation of 240 meters. It is the highest hill in the city, from which Mandalay derives its name. Mandalay Hill is world-renowned for its numerous pagodas and temples and has been the most important pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for the past 200 years.

Mandalay Hill has stairways on its southern, southeastern, western, and northern slopes, with stone benches placed at short intervals along the way for visitors to rest, making the climb very convenient. Climbing Mandalay Hill can be a highly rewarding experience, as you will encounter many distinctive temples and statues along the path. For example, not far from the summit, there is a giant Buddha statue known as the "Prophesying" Buddha, who points his right hand toward Mandalay City. Legend has it that the Buddha once passed through this place and prophesied that in the year 2400, during the golden age of Buddhism, a prosperous city would emerge at the foot of the hill—right where he preached the Dharma.

At the top of Mandalay Hill stands a pagoda called Sutaungpyei (literally meaning “wish-fulfilling”). It is said that any wish made here will come true. Of course, you can also choose to take a cable car up the hill. Nowadays, there is also a one-way motorcycle lane leading directly to the elevator of the summit pagoda, designed for visitors who may not be able to manage the climb.

     Mandalay Hill

Formerly known as Mount of the Ogress, it is a famous Buddhist sacred site in Myanmar. Although not particularly high, Mandalay Hill is lined with many temples along its stairways, including the renowned Eight Great Temples, and features countless Buddha statues.

After climbing over 1,700 steps to reach the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Mandalay City. There is also a Hindu temple here, where square pillars are interconnected by bracket sets, and the glass decorations embedded in the pillars sparkle brilliantly in the sunlight.

From the hill, you can witness the most beautiful cityscapes at sunset and gaze upon the vast expanse of the Irrawaddy River below. Despite the challenging climb, locals still make devout pilgrimages up the mountain, reflecting the profound influence of Buddhism in Myanmar.

Special Note: Out of respect for the Buddha, visitors must remove their shoes and socks before ascending Mandalay Hill. Those unaccustomed to walking barefoot may choose to take a vehicle up the hill, but they will miss out on the temples and statues along the way.

     Admission Fees & Opening Hours

The Mandalay Pass costs $10; an additional photography fee of 300 kyats applies if you wish to take photos.

     Transportation

Mandalay Hill is not far from the city center, and taking a taxi or a trishaw are both good options. Taxis do not use meters, with fares generally ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 kyats. Taking a trishaw or renting your own bicycle is relatively more economical, costing around 500 kyats.
