To reach the top of Shwesandaw Pagoda for the sunset, you must climb an extremely steep stone staircase — nearly vertical steps that go straight up. You’ll have to climb barefoot, which adds to the sense of spiritual devotion and challenge. Though there is an iron railing along the stairs, you still need to tread carefully, or you could easily slip. Once at the top, you’ll find the platform crowded with people from all over the world — a truly magnificent sight as everyone eagerly awaits the sunset. Looking out, you'll see the vast plains swept by the wind stretch as far as the eye can see, with the winding Irrawaddy River reflecting the sunset across the landscape. Thousands of stupas glow with the golden light of dusk, casting long shadows across the green fields, like a gentle dance of life reborn and flowing softly.
Shwesandaw Pagoda is a perfect spot for a peaceful sunset experience. Bagan at sunset is solemn, and quietness spreads across the plains. When the final rays of sunlight finally bathe the pagoda cluster and the surrounding plain, everyone becomes immersed in the beauty of the moment, reluctant to leave. People sit quietly, listening to the ancient tales of glory whispered by these pagodas and temples.
