The Red Army Square also served as a training ground for the Red Army, spanning nearly the size of two football fields. The ground is covered with lawn, surrounded by some planted trees and devoid of any other decorations. At the front is a Red Army reviewing stand, and in the middle distance stands a monument — the Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of the Red Army, which was also designed by Qian Zhuangfei. The monument resembles a rocket ready for launch, standing atop a five-pointed star base. Visitors can walk up to the monument via a dozen or so steps on each of the five sides. The body of the monument is earth-toned and inlaid with uniformly sized pebbles. Between the reviewing stand and the monument, the words “March Forward Along the Bloodstained Path of the Red Army” are prominently embedded in the ground in cement, standing out clearly against the green lawn. Each character is about two square meters in size, firm and resolute — as if they were the last words of the martyrs, or the vows of later generations at their tombs.
