Museum of Ethnology

Museum of Ethnology
The Museum of Ethnology is located within the Kwai Lai White Heron Lake Interactive Centre at No. __, Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong. Opened in 2000, it is Hong Kong’s first museum themed around world ethnic cultures, exhibiting over a thousand cultural artifacts from various regions around the globe. These displays showcase how humans in different geographical environments have utilized and combined elements of nature—plants, trees, stones—and applied creativity and invention to improve their quality of life. The astonishing wisdom, vitality, as well as the spirit of "adaptation" and "improvement" embodied in these exhibits are values that modern urban dwellers are gradually forgetting.

In the mid-1990s, Kerry Properties planned to develop a large-scale residential project in Tai Po (comprising 2 residential towers with 9 floors each, 50 detached villas, and 28 duplex villas). Since the site is adjacent to a lagoon and mangrove wetlands—a habitat for egrets—the government stipulated in the land lease that the developer must construct and operate the Tai Po White Heron Lake Interactive Nature Centre to complement the residential development and promote environmental awareness. In addition to the Museum of Ethnology, the White Heron Lake Interactive Nature Centre also includes a “Nature Café” and an “Activity Centre.”
