Former Residence of Martyr He Tingying

The former residence of Martyr He Tingying is located in Hejiawan Village, Chengguan Town, Nanzheng County. It was the birthplace of the revolutionary martyr He Tingying, who participated in the Autumn Harvest Uprising and served as a representative (with Mao Zedong as division commander) of the 11th Division of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army. The residence was built in the late Qing Dynasty, with the house mainly made of earth and timber, featuring carved lattice windows and doors, and overall laid out as a quadrangle courtyard. The residence displays furniture once used by He Tingying, such as a wooden desk, wardrobe, and bamboo chairs. In 1981, the former residence was designated as a county-level key cultural relic protection unit by the Nanzheng County People's Government, and in August 2000, it was recognized as a municipal-level key cultural relic protection unit by the Hanzhong Municipal People's Government.

He Tingying: Born in May 1905 in Hejiawan Village, he entered Hanzhong United Middle School in 1920. Influenced by his cousin Wang Junshi, an early revolutionary youth in Hanzhong, he became actively involved in revolutionary activities. In 1925, he enrolled at Datong University in Shanghai, where he took part in the May Fourth Movement, joined the Communist Youth League of China, and soon after became a member of the Communist Party of China. He later transferred to Shanghai University. When the Northern Expedition began, he was sent by the Party organization to Wuhan to study military affairs and served as a political instructor in a regiment of the National Revolutionary Army. In September 1927, He Tingying participated in the Autumn Harvest Uprising at the Hunan-Jiangxi border, marching toward Jinggangshan with Mao Zedong. During the reorganization at Sanwan, he was appointed as the political commissar of the 1st Regiment of the 4th Division of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army and concurrently as the political commissar of the 3rd Battalion. In March 1928, when the Preparatory Committee of the Autumn Harvest Uprising was reorganized into a divisional Party committee, He Tingying served as the secretary. Later that same year in May...

In October, he was elected as a member of the Party Committee of the Hunan-Jiangxi Border Region, and in December, he was reassigned as the representative of the 32nd Regiment of the Red 4th Army. Under the leadership of Mao Zedong and others, He Tingying took part in various anti-"encirclement" struggles at Jinggangshan. He personally commanded the famous Battle of Huangyangjie, making a great contribution to defending the Jinggangshan revolutionary base. In January 1929, He Tingying was seriously wounded in the battle at Dayuling, Jiangxi. Due to the harsh environment and frequent battles, he was ambushed by enemy forces during a night relocation and died a heroic death at the age of 24.
