Legend has it that in 1197, King Narapatisithu of Bagan received four sacred Buddhist relics from the King of Sri Lanka. To better preserve these precious items, he commissioned the construction of this shrine in 1198 to house the relics. The pagoda is built from bricks, with reddish-brown surfaces adorned with illustrations from the Jataka tales. Surrounded by lush trees and blooming flowers, Dhammayazika Pagoda is not easy to climb. Only after some effort can visitors reach the top to enjoy an unobstructed view of Bagan’s religious architectural complex.
