The original Bupaya Pagoda was destroyed in the 1975 earthquake, falling into pieces into the Irrawaddy River, which was a great loss. Between 1976 and 1978, Bupaya was reconstructed using modern, durable building materials, and the top of the pagoda was gilded. Unlike typical pagodas, Bupaya features a bell-shaped dome and is covered in gold, giving off a brilliant golden glow. It has become one of the most distinctive landmarks along the Irrawaddy River. Bupaya is the best spot in Bagan for watching the sunset. As the sun sets behind the spire, the white light is dazzling. When you squint, the tower casts shimmering reflections, creating an illusion almost like a mirage.
