The Huashan Scenic Area is located near Wanghada Village in Jinshan Township, Huma County. The scenic area features one mountain and one island along the Heilongjiang River. The mountain is Huashan, which stands 307 meters tall. Its riverside face is semi-circular, with bare rocks and steep, upright cliffs that stand boldly against the river, as if cleaved by a knife, facing a mountain on the Russian side across the water. Legend has it that the two mountains were once one, but perhaps due to some great tectonic movement, the single mountain was split into two, now belonging to China and Russia respectively.
The island is a peninsula covering 100 hectares, densely covered with lush vegetation, bursting with vitality like bamboo shoots after a spring rain, adding endless charm to the scenic area. There are also two streams and several ponds on the island. When the water level of the Heilongjiang River is high, it connects with the river, allowing fish to swim directly in, making it a great spot for fishing. The southeast side of the island features the gentle flow of the Heilongjiang River and a two-kilometer stretch of shallow sandy beach, forming a natural swimming area where those who enjoy swimming can show off their skills. On the east side of the island is a mixed forest with delicious wild fruits such as mountain hawthorn and bird cherries for visitors to pick and taste. Among the woods and grass, there are also various wild delicacies like grass mushrooms and willow mushrooms. The peninsula is rich and colorful — if you’re observant, you’re sure to be pleasantly surprised.
Huashan’s beauty is truly breathtaking: standing against the river, it resembles either a valiant soldier guarding the nation or a solemn national gateway, showcasing the heroic spirit of the Chinese people. The exposed rocks on the mountain are colorful. In summer, flocks of rock martins, which make their homes in caves, circle the mountainside. At times they resemble brave spirits flying toward the river, at others like couples strolling through the hills, or valiant border guards patrolling the frontier, or even mischievous children playing and laughing. From afar, the beautiful Huashan looks like a huge oil painting hanging by the Heilongjiang River. That’s why people call it “Huashan,” or “Painted Mountain.” This “painting” is expansive, splendid, and majestic, exuding the bold aspirations of the Chinese nation.
