Xumishan Grottoes
Located on the southern foothills of Xumishan in Guyuan County, Ningxia, there are over a hundred grottoes collectively known as the “Xumishan Grottoes,” which are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. "Xumi" is a Sanskrit word meaning "Golden Mountain." The grottoes were first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty (4th–6th century AD) and expanded in subsequent dynasties, with over 20 caves still preserved to this day. Among them, the sculptures from the Northern Zhou Dynasty are the most exquisite; those from the Sui Dynasty feature a simple style, while the Tang Dynasty carvings are notable for their plump facial features and serene expressions—making them valuable resources for understanding the history of the grottoes and studying ancient society.

Unlike most grottoes in China, which are carved into a single cliff, the Xumishan Grottoes are spread across eight separate mountains divided by ravines, creating a unique layout. The gullies are connected by staircases and bridges. The Xumishan area features overlapping peaks, lush forests, and flowing streams, offering stunning scenery that is a rare gem within the Loess Plateau of Northwest China. Bridges and staircases have been built between the various gullies to facilitate visiting.

    Tips:

Transportation: Take a bus from Guyuan County to San Ying Town (about 1 hour ride, fare around 3.5 RMB), then take a vehicle from the intersection north of the town to Xumishan (approximately 1 hour ride, fare 5 RMB). During the off-season, you may need to hire a private car from San Ying to Xumishan at a rate of 20 RMB (for a small van).
