Dongyue Mountain

Introduction About three li east of Guyuan City stands the towering Dongyue Mountain. Ever since the temple of the Eastern Peak Deity was built here, the mountain has been renamed Dongyue Mountain and has become a renowned cultural mountain in Guyuan. According to historical records and the recollections of elders, by the end of the Qing Dynasty, it had developed into a grand architectural complex of “nine terraces, eighteen courtyards, and seventy-two main halls,” famous across northwest China. The nine terraces are as follows: The first terrace: the Mountain Gate. The second terrace: the Mahavira Hall, Kṣitigarbha Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Stone Buddha Temple. The third terrace: the Lu Ban Memorial Hall and the Spirit Official Cave. The fourth terrace: the City God Temple and Guan Yu Temple. The fifth terrace: the Medicine King Cave and Bodhisattva Cave. The sixth terrace: the Five Dragons Stele. The seventh terrace: the Jade Emperor Tower. The eighth terrace: the Eastern Peak Deity Hall and the Offspring Palace. The ninth terrace: the Iron Rope Ridge.
