The area mainly consists of three zones: the waterside leisure landscape zone, the urban historical and cultural zone, and the ecological sightseeing zone. The ancient moat of Taizhou is 6,650 meters long in total, and the “green water encircling the city” forms a rare natural ecological landscape in a modern urban setting. A boat ride on the river offers a profound sense of the city’s historical depth since its establishment in the Southern Tang Dynasty. From the railing of Wanghai Tower, known as the “No.1 Tower in Jianghuai” and originally built in the Song Dynasty, visitors can take in panoramic views of the country’s only “trio village of opera culture,” a cluster of Buddhist temples that have produced numerous eminent monks from around the world, and the unique remnants of salt-tax architecture in Chinese history. The well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, rich in “Taizhou character,” tell the stories of many notable historical figures, including Fan Zhongyan, Wang Anshi, Wen Tianxiang, Yue Fei, Kong Shangren, Liu Jingting, and Lin Zexu.
On the eastern side of the scenic area lies Taizhou Old Street, featuring ancient Ming and Qing-style architecture. Exquisite brick carvings, ornamental brickwork, traditional residential gateways with breathable flower ridges, plaques, banners, shop signs, and colorful lanterns create a delightful atmosphere. The street also houses an ancient theater stage and a town theater that showcase Taizhou’s intangible cultural heritage. Over a hundred traditional snack shops and family-run restaurants form the premier snack street in central Jiangsu. In addition to enjoying the urban splendor of Fengcheng River, visitors can also savor a variety of local delicacies.
