Yi’an Garden
Yi’an Garden is situated on the picturesque Yi’an North Road in the city center. It was once a wild low-lying area, but in 2000, the Tongling municipal government carried out the Yi’an Garden construction project as a practical initiative for the public. Due to its relatively low terrain, the completed Yi’an Garden is also referred to as a “pocket park right before your eyes.”

The garden covers a modest area of about 3,000 square meters. Descending the roadside steps, you’ll be greeted by a shimmering green lake that resembles a mirror, reflecting the towering buildings of the city. The lake is divided by a Qihu Stone Arch Bridge, and its shores are lined with lush clusters of trees, some reaching over ten meters in height. Particularly eye-catching are the graceful willow trees, which stand elegantly like beautiful women, their hanging branches seemingly kissing the lake’s surface. When a gentle breeze blows, the reflections of pavilions ripple across the water, appearing and disappearing in a delightful spectacle. The lake is encircled by stone walls meticulously crafted by artisans to serve as resting spots. Along the shore, a stone-paved path winds like a carpet, welcoming hundreds of visitors daily.

After a bout of wind and rain, the scenery of Yi’an Garden becomes even more enchanting. The hazy atmosphere, with drifting fallen leaves floating on the lake and countless dragonflies flitting about, adds vibrancy to the water’s surface. Perhaps due to the heat, bats skim across the lake, using their bodies to touch the water as a way to cool off. Post-rain is also the prime time for fishing—fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the leisurely activity even if they don’t catch anything, finding joy in the experience.

Two pavilions in Yi’an Garden stand facing each other across the lake. The lotus flowers blooming in the water remain upright, a symbol of their nobility and elegance. Though not abundant, the lotuses bring an extra touch of vitality to the garden.

Most visitors to Yi’an Garden are middle-aged and elderly locals who take advantage of the garden’s idyllic setting. In small groups, they come here for recreation—admiring the lake, playing cards, chatting, reading newspapers, practicing exercises, or enjoying quality time with grandchildren. Outside the pavilion by the lake is an observation deck furnished with more than ten round marble tables, similar to the ones scattered throughout Yi’an Garden, offering ideal spaces for board game enthusiasts. Standing in the middle of the lake and looking up, you’ll see skyscrapers rising all around. The lake and the buildings complement each other beautifully, creating a scene akin to a traditional Chinese painting that captivates and lingers in the memory.
