The Rockbund Art Museum is the first in China to fully support the creation of contemporary art and artistic creativity. As a key component of the Rockbund project, the museum reflects the initiative’s grand vision focused on the Bund Source area—preserving historic buildings and revitalizing the local cultural scene through art, fashion, commerce, and leisure activities. Backed by strong funding, the museum supports artists in creating entirely new original works, conceptualizing and curating short-term art exhibitions, and placing great emphasis on professionalism and content quality in its curation practices.
The Rockbund Art Museum actively engages with contemporary art, energizing both the Chinese and international art scenes. The artworks exhibited represent important and compelling challenges within contemporary art (such as Cai Guo-Qiang: Peasant Da Vinci in 2010 and Paola Pivi’s 2012 solo exhibition Sharing, But Not Fairly), and are committed to commissioning site-specific new works (such as Model Home 2012: Lin Ming-Hong in 2012). It also invites independent curators to re-examine exhibition practices (such as Hou Hanru’s 2011 Night and Day, featuring artists Choi Jeong Hwa, Nedko Solakov, Pietro Gabriella Esposito, Sam Samore, Shazia Sikander, Du Yun, Sun Xun, Tu Weizheng, and Zhou Tiehai; and Liao Wei’s 2012 Time Travelers, featuring artists Huang Yong Ping, Yan Lei, Liu Jianhua, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu).
The Rockbund Art Museum provides space for artists and curators with specific visions and strong creative drive to develop art projects, envisioning, creating, and collaborating on both solo and group exhibitions. It balances representation of both international and domestic artists, embraces a wide range of innovative practices (including dance, design, architecture, etc.), and promotes highly influential leading artists as well as emerging art initiatives.
With a mission of “humanistic care and the promotion of art,” the Rockbund Art Museum offers audiences the best presentation and viewing environment for artworks, and is dedicated to the research, exchange, and promotion of contemporary art. The museum’s newly established research and education platform collaborates openly with various academic institutions, foundations, and educational bodies, organizing a rich variety of activities including lectures, seminars, film screenings, performances, workshops, and educational programs.
The Rockbund Art Museum sees itself as an open and dynamic institution that strongly supports contemporary artists and curators, boldly meets the many challenges of creative contemporary art, and actively stimulates vibrant exhibition projects and cultural events.
