Quebrada de Humahuaca

  Introduction

The Quebrada de Humahuaca region has been a vital route for the movement and communication of people between the high plateau of the Andes and the plains for over 10,000 years. Its strategic location led to settlements that fostered the development of agriculture and trade. Its distinctive pre-Hispanic and pre-Inca settlements blend harmoniously with the surrounding area, creating a uniquely vivid landscape that is truly exceptional.

The Quebrada de Humahuaca follows a major cultural route, the Camino Inca, along the spectacular valley of the Río Grande, from the cold desert sources of the Andes to its confluence with the Río Leone, 150 km to the south. This area has served as a major trade route for the past 10,000 years. It was a gathering place for prehistoric hunting groups and bears traces of the Inca Empire (5th–6th centuries) as well as of the struggles for independence in the 19th and 20th centuries.
