Changbai Mountain Plateau Ice and Snow Sports Training Base

Changbai Mountain Plateau Ice and Snow Sports Training Base
The Changbai Mountain Plateau Ice Field Training Base is situated in the primeval forests of the Jilin Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve. With vast snowfields, pure water quality, and spectacular, majestic scenery, it serves as one of China’s main training bases for winter sports athletes and is also a renowned year-round destination that combines natural ice rinks with alpine ski slopes, ideal for both winter and summer tourism. Its ski runs wind through the boundless primeval forests of Changbai Mountain, lined with towering ancient pines and birches, offering breathtaking views. Visitors can ski with poles and boards or ride snowmobiles across the snowy terrain, immersing themselves in the wonders of this icy kingdom.

Nestled among the peaks of Changbai Mountain, the base sits at an altitude of 1,640 to 1,820 meters, with temperatures often ranging between -15°C and -25°C. Covering a total area of 120,000 square meters, it is one of the few comprehensive bases in China that integrates ice-skating, skiing training, and sports tourism. The optimal period for ice and snow tourism and training activities is from October to early May each year.

The ice rink, treated with scientific techniques, features pure ice quality and excellent glide, where many athletes have broken national and world records.

The base includes a natural alpine ski slope, internationally standardized cross-country skiing and biathlon venues, a plateau speed skating rink, a figure skating rink, and a comprehensive gymnasium. Among its over ten ice and snow training facilities, the alpine ski slope on the mountainside along the left side of the Tianchi Highway has a 35-meter course with an average slope of 20 degrees. A single-chair cable car provides convenient training access for athletes. The Xiaotianchi Ski Slope and Hot Spring Ski Slope are popular spots for snow tourists and beginners. The cross-country skiing and biathlon courses twist through dense forests, featuring a 5-kilometer and a 3-kilometer route respectively. The elevation changes of the courses fully comply with competition regulations. The start and finish lines are set on the ice rink, ensuring clear visibility and well-defined tracks. The shooting range and penalty loops are located within the inner curves of two bends. The facilities and communication equipment meet modern standards and have received praise from experts in the ice and snow sports community and foreign coaches.

Over the past 36 years, the ski resort has hosted numerous domestic and international athletes for training and competitions. Internationally, ski teams from Russia (Khabarovsk, Chelyabinsk), Nagano Prefecture in Japan, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have trained here. Additionally, coaches and experts from Austria, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Canada, and other countries have visited the Changbai Mountain ski slopes to give lectures and assist with training.

Ski teams from various provinces across China and the People’s Liberation Army have conducted training and competitions here for many years. The cross-country skiing and biathlon events of the 6th National Winter Games of China were held at this site. The ski resort has also hosted multiple bilateral and multilateral international friendly skiing competitions. Over the past 36 years, nearly 5,000 person-times have undertaken extended snow season training and competitions here. The base has evolved from a closed, training-only facility to one that engages with society and the market, offering sports tourism and services as part of the tertiary tourism industry.
