The Perito Moreno Glacier is located at the southern tip of South America, near 52 degrees south latitude, within the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. It is one of the few active glaciers on Earth where ice continues to advance. Before 1988, the "calving" phenomenon occurred only once every four years, but now, due to atmospheric pollution and rising temperatures, it happens every 20 minutes. Some say it serves as an alarm bell for air pollution levels. The average summer temperature ranges from 10 to 17 degrees Celsius, while the coldest winter temperatures can drop to minus 17 degrees. The best time to visit is from November to February. From Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, there are daily domestic flights in summer, first to the southern city of Río Gallegos. From there, you can take a small plane or bus to El Calafate. There are monthly buses from El Calafate to the glacier. Another nearby glacier, Upsala Glacier, is larger than Perito Moreno, but in terms of grandeur and scenery, Perito Moreno remains the most stunning.
