Lake Argentino
Lake Argentino is a glacial lake situated in the southern Argentine province of Santa Cruz and is one of the rarest glacial lakes in South America. With an area of 1,414 square kilometers, the lake sits at an elevation of 187 meters and reaches a maximum depth of 719 meters—second only to Chile’s O’Higgins Lake (836 meters) in the southern region, making it the second deepest lake in South America. Lake Argentino is world-renowned for its spectacular ice formations. The lake drains via the Santa Cruz River on its eastern shore into the Atlantic Ocean. Several glaciers, including the Perito Moreno and Upsala glaciers, extend into the lake, calving into countless icebergs that float across its surface.

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dense forests on its slopes, the scenery around Lake Argentino is majestic and breathtaking. It has been designated as part of Los Glaciares National Park, making it a popular tourist destination. The lake receives ice flows and chunks from over 150 surrounding glaciers. Massive ice blocks collide and slowly advance, sometimes forming uniquely shaped ice walls up to 80 meters high, all of which eventually converge in Lake Argentino, creating pristine white ice sculptures. The lake waters are calm and deep, with lush aquatic plants along the shores and a rich diversity of bird species. Today, Lake Argentino stands as one of Argentina’s most captivating tourist attractions.
