Songgu Scenic Area of Huangshan
Huangshan is often described as having "a perilous front mountain and a picturesque back mountain," with the back mountain referring to the Songgu Scenic Area at the north gate of Huangshan.
The Songgu Scenic Area is situated on the northern slope of Huangshan, encompassing the valleys between Lion Peak, Camel Peak, Bookcase Peak, and Pagoda Peak. For visitors arriving at Huangshan’s north gate—Taiping—the best route is to enter the mountain via Furong Ridge at the north gate.
Hiking up from Furong Ridge requires climbing over 6,500 stone steps with an elevation gain of 1,100 meters. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by thousands of competing peaks and wondrous ravines, with uniquely shaped rocks and famous pools being particularly striking. The area features high mountains covered in dense forests, where emerald peaks glisten, waterfalls and springs flow, and ancient temples and nunneries lie in serene seclusion. There are also rare flowers, exotic trees, and a pleasant climate. Streams, ponds, and pools are distinctive features of the scenic area. The valley boasts overlapping emerald peaks and lush greenery year-round, with ancient pines and bamboos hidden among them. This tranquil and beautiful region is filled with murmuring streams, ponds, pools, springs, and waterfalls that together create the unique scenery of the Songgu area. Scattered throughout the valley, ancient structures such as "Furong Residence" and "Songgu Chanlin" add a mysterious charm to this peaceful ravine.
The cliff inscriptions of Songgu are worth admiring for visitors. Visiting during the plum rain season offers the chance to experience the famous "Songgu Listening to the Waves" spectacle.
When visiting the Songgu Scenic Area, you can see famous peaks such as Furong Peak, Danxia Peak, Songlin Peak, and Shuangsun Peak; unusual rock formations such as Immortals Viewing the Sea, Immortals Paving the Road, Tiger Carrying a Sheep, Guan Yu Blocking Cao, and Recumbent Tiger Rock; water features such as Jadeite Pool and Five-Dragon Pool; as well as ancient architecture like Furong Residence and Songgu Chanlin.
