Former Residence of Yang Yukuo

Yang Yukuo, a celebrated anti-French general and a patriotic military leader, is a pride of Yunnan, as well as of the Nujiang and Lanping regions. His former residence is situated on Yingpan Street, Yingpan Town, Lanping County. It was initially built in October 1876, during the second year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty, covering an area of approximately 3,200 square meters. The site consists of three main parts: the Manor House (Juefu), the Cangjiang Academy, and the Kuixing Pavilion. The Manor House alone spans 2,500 square meters, featuring three courtyards, 72 gates, a screen wall, ancestral shrine, a garden planted with incense cypress, phoenix trees, and Yunnan pines, as well as the joint tomb of Yang Yukuo’s parents, which is inscribed with a memorial epitaph. The Cangjiang Academy is a traditional quadrangle courtyard with a central skylight, composed of the main building, side wings, and a front gate tower. The courtyard features inscriptions related to school regulations and covers an area of about 475 square meters. Later, after the Manor House was destroyed in a fire, only the screen wall, ancestral shrine, trees, tomb, and epitaphs remain. On December 22, 1998, local benefactors in Lanping funded the carving and placement of a statue of Yang Yukuo in front of his ancestral shrine.
