According to the Xuanping County Annals from the Republican era: “Sanyan is seventy li east of the county, to the left of Fu Rock (Tianshi Tower), with cliffs a thousand ren high. In the mountainside there is a cave over fifty zhang deep and just as wide, where residents established a shrine for Hu Gong.” Hu Gong Cave is also known as the Red Army Cave.
Inside the cave stands the “Sanyan Temple Red Army Martyrs Monument,” inscribed by Comrade Ye Fei, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. On September 10, 1930, the headquarters of the Third Column of the 13th Red Army of Chinese Workers and Peasants was stationed in this cave. The back of the monument records the activities of the Red Army at that time.
Next to Sanyan Temple is Ma Yao Peak. Climbing up Ma Yao Peak, one can’t help but gasp in amazement: on one side of Ma Yao is a sheer cliff plunging hundreds of zhang down into an abyss, and in a corner of the abyss, two rocky cliffs frame a long, narrow gorge. On the side of the gorge stands a towering, ochre-colored banner-like rock formation, 152 meters high and over 400 meters wide.
Other sights include Tianshi Tower, the Great Banner Reaching the Sky, Shenlong Peak, Linked Caves, Fanjing Peak, Chihu Sinking Blue, Chiyen Temple, and Ruomao Peak, among others…
From a distance, the scenic area presents a continuous range of peaks, ethereal and drifting, with mist like ribbons swaying gently, as if a gathering of fairies were displaying their magical skills, weaving together an enchantingly beautiful web.
