La Plata Natural History Museum
The La Plata Natural History Museum (La Plata Museum of natural history) is located in the city of La Plata, Argentina, and houses a vast collection of valuable specimens in archaeology, ethnography, zoology, botany, mineralogy, and more. Nestled within the woods on the outskirts of La Plata, there stands a grand neoclassical building — this is the Natural Sciences Museum of the National University of La Plata. Established in 1884, it is the largest museum of its kind in South America and one of the world’s most renowned museums, particularly celebrated for its collection of paleontological fossils. At the museum's entrance, there are two restored stone statues of the now-extinct Pampas jaguar. Suspended from the ceiling of the ground floor foyer is the complete skeleton of a whale. The exhibits include fossils of ancient life from the South American continent and its oceans, indigenous artifacts such as pottery, bows and arrows, and canoes used by Native Americans, as well as excavated human remains preserved in clay urns, reflecting the burial customs of those ancient peoples.
