The Cathedral of La Plata was modeled after the cathedrals of Amiens and Cologne in Europe. Its foundation stone was laid in 1884. Construction was halted in the 1930s due to concerns about the stability of its foundation, leaving the spires unfinished. In the mid-1990s, the foundation was reinforced, and two bell towers, six turrets, and 200 pinnacles were completed. Bells were installed, and the exterior was clad in tiles to resemble the Nordic cathedral Uppsala Cathedral. The renovation project was completed and opened to the public in 2000.
