The Yin Family Hall is an ancient residential architectural complex located in Qingshui Village, Yangqiao Township, Shaodong County. The compound sits against mountains and beside water, with convenient transportation. It can be reached by car from the county seat in about forty minutes.
Historical records indicate that the Yin Family Hall was built on July 10, 1823 (the third year of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty), under the direction of five brothers — Shen Chengshu and his siblings — following the wishes of their father, Shen Zu’ao, who held the official title of Fengzheng Dafu (a mid-level imperial scholar-official). Covering an area of 8,081 square meters, the complex consists of 108 living rooms and 36 auxiliary rooms, all of which are well preserved. The entire structure is built with brick and wood. The two-story buildings are made entirely of blue bricks, featuring a complex yet rigorous structure and a chessboard-like layout. On either side of the main hall are four rows of living rooms and one row of auxiliary rooms, symmetrically arranged and uniformly sized. Four corridors run through the courtyard, and the shrine in the central hall remains intact. A large plaque bears the three golden characters “Yin Family Hall,” surrounded by gilded Buddha images. There are thirty courtyards and 138 large round wooden pillars throughout the complex. The surrounding areas of the courtyards are built with carved stone materials. In front of the compound lies a 2,000-square-meter drying ground and a flagstone path. The roof, eaves, blue bricks, and stone piers are all adorned with carvings of dragons, phoenixes, oxen, sheep, horses, and other figures. The sculptures are lifelike and vividly crafted.
Originally inhabited by the four brothers who commissioned its construction — the Shen Chengshu brothers — the Yin Family Hall now houses seventy households of residents with the surname Shen, totaling nearly 300 people. Visitors and researchers who come to view and study the site are invariably fascinated by it. A common impression is that the Yin Family Hall boasts exquisite architecture, grand scale, and elegant, beautiful design. It seamlessly blends ancient architectural art with the beauty of nature, leaving a profound and unforgettable impression.
