Aoyu Peak

Introduction Located in the central part of Huangshan. It is named for its resemblance to an open-mouthed, food-ready sea turtle (aoyu). It is the foremost of the Thirty-Six Lesser Peaks of Huangshan. Descending from Lotus Peak, you pass the Turtle and Snake Rocks and the Hundred Steps Cloud Ladder, then go through Lotus Cave to reach Aoyu Peak. This peak stands at an elevation of 1,780 meters and is named after its shape—the massive, lofty whale-like head gives the impression of swallowing the heavens and earth. Descending from Lotus Peak, you pass the Turtle and Snake Rocks and the Hundred Steps Cloud Ladder, then go through Lotus Cave to arrive at Aoyu Peak. On the mountainside is a triangular cave called Aoyu Cave, with the characters “天造” (created by nature) carved above the entrance. Inside the cave there is a staircase, and visitors enter and exit through it, resembling the turtle spitting out or taking in water. In front of the peak are several rocks that resemble snails when viewed from afar; on the back side of the peak is a large turtle-shaped rock cleverly formed beside several small egg-shaped rocks, creating scenes such as the turtle carrying a golden turtle and the old turtle laying eggs. Transportation Located in the central-western part of Huangshan, it is accessible by passing through Lotus Cave after descending from Lotus Peak.
