Three Stone Tower

On the outskirts of Nuku'alofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, there is a three-stone tower named “HAMOAGA,” which is said to be the archway of the old royal palace. It was built by ancient Tongans using large stones transported from Wallis Island on massive canoes. Legend has it that this structure was built in the year 1200, during the reign of Tui Tonga, the king who ruled over all Tongan tribes at the time. Since then, the Kingdom of Tonga has gone through many trials, including the Tui Ha'a Takalaua dynasty, the Tu'i Kanokupolu dynasty, and the current Tupou dynasty. Yet, this majestic and victorious Three Stone Tower (HAMOAGA) has stood firm throughout, silently witnessing the ups and downs of Tonga’s history. It is a 5-meter-high triumphal arch made from three volcanic rocks. In ancient times, kings had to pass through this gate before going to war to ensure their victorious return, and it also served as a watchtower. The Three Stone Tower is one of the first places in the world to see the sunrise, attracting numerous visitors each year who come specifically to witness the first light of day.
