Longyuan Kou

Longyuan Kou is situated in the southern part of Yongxin County, approximately 17 kilometers from the county town. On June 23, 1928, Mao Zedong and Zhu De led the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army along with local border militias to engage in fierce battles against two Nationalist divisions—led by Yang Chisheng and Yang Ruxuan—that outnumbered them several times over at New and Old Qixi Ridge, as well as at Bai Kou in Longyuan Kou. They defeated the two Yangs, shattered the joint encirclement campaign by enemy forces from Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, recaptured Yongxin County for the third time, and propelled the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base Area into its most prosperous period. The Victory at Longyuan Kou was the most significant military triumph for our forces during the Jinggangshan struggle, laying a solid foundation for the peak development of the base area and holding extremely important strategic significance in its construction. The back design of the second series of 3-yuan RMB notes issued in 1953 features the iconic Longyuan Kou Bridge. Today, Longyuan Kou is home to a range of historical sites, including the Victory Bridge, the Victory Monument (with an inscription personally written by Zhu De), Wangyue Pavilion (the original filming site of the song “Ten Farewells to the Red Army”), the former site of the Qiuxi Township Party Branch (the first rural Party branch established by Mao Zedong himself during the Jinggangshan struggle), Mao Zedong’s former residence, the former site of the Qiuxi Detachment, the ancient streets of Longyuan Kou Village, relics of Red Army battle sites, Longyuan Kou Lake, Ayuta Pagoda, and the Suiyuan Mountain Nature Reserve.
