Initially opposed by the public, it was nearly demolished entirely in 1939. Today, it has become an irreplaceable icon of Buenos Aires. The Obelisk stands prominently in the city center, serving as a reference point for visitors from around the world. Originally white, it was restored on November 1, 2005, and painted in the tone of "Paris stone." On December 1, 2005, the obelisk was covered with a giant pink ribbon in commemoration of World AIDS Day. To mark the 30th anniversary of La Noche de los Lápices (The Night of the Pencils), the obelisk was transformed into the shape of a giant pencil.
