The story mainly revolves around the sacred peak of Gu Bu Ta Jie, who is regarded as the incarnation of a local hero named Gu Bu Ta Jie, a demon subduer. During his lifetime, he vanquished evil spirits and demons, bringing peace and harmony to the region. He is revered as the greatest deity in the hearts of the local people.
The other twelve sacred peaks in the story are incarnations of his grandfather, prince, —, prime minister, holy physician, sorcerer, mage, steward, merchant, weaponsmith, warhorse, and sacred ox. They tell a series of beautiful and captivating mythological tales.
In 763 AD, when Master Padmasambhava was invited to Tibet, he subdued many demons and evil spirits in the region and enshrined them as local mountain gods and guardians. In his classic text “Guolong Zha Xi Prayer,” King Lobsang Choekyi Gyaltsen, and in the classic “Zha Xi Da Jie Thirteen Peaks Prayer Scripture — Auspicious Treasure,” Ma Ri also documented the myth that in 1040 AD, Milarepa enshrined Gu Bu Zha Xi Ta Jie as the guardian deity of this land.
