Archaeological Site of Leptis Magna
Leptis was once one of the grand cities of the Roman Empire and is considered the best-preserved ancient Roman city site in the Mediterranean region. It was expanded and artistically designed by Septimius Severus, who was born there and later became its ruler. Leptis became one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire, renowned for its magnificent public monuments, artificial harbor, markets, warehouses, shops, and residential areas.

To date, over 300 ancient monuments have been excavated, including public baths, an academic forum covering one hectare, the harbor, temples, markets, and the large theater. Most of these ruins have been well restored. The restoration of the circular theater, which could accommodate 15,000 spectators, has been largely completed. Hundreds of statues and mosaic panels have been moved to museums in Tripoli for preservation.

Unfortunately, the extensive ancient Roman flood prevention system built at the time has suffered severe damage and is beyond repair. Between 1987 and 1988, Leptis was hit by floods, and UNESCO provided substantial equipment assistance. However, restoring the Leptis site will take several years.
