Nearly all the mountainous areas of the Acacus display rock paintings and carvings in a wide range of styles, reflecting the cultural practices of different groups that inhabited the region throughout the long prehistoric period. The paintings in the Fezzan desert vividly illustrate the ancient climatic changes caused by the encroachment of the desert. The images include depictions of people from the Mediterranean region of that time, with round heads and ambiguous gender, as well as artwork featuring cattle.
These images were created using pigments in yellow, green, red, and black, indicating that humans have been using carbon-based dyes since over 8,000 BCE. The depiction of horses and chariots from around 1500 BCE may represent scenes from the life of the ancient Garamantes tribe, as described by Herodotus, the "Father of History."
