Old Town of Ghadames
The ancient town of Ghadames is situated to the west of the Hadr region in Libya, Africa. Built on a desert oasis, it has long been known as the "Pearl of the Desert" and is one of the oldest cities on the northern edge of the Sahara. Both the Roman Empire and the Berbers have successively conquered this area, bringing unique characteristics to the traditional architecture of the old town. The Old Town of Ghadames and its surrounding oases cover a total area of 225 hectares, including 10 hectares of earthen dwellings, most of which are built near areas rich in springs.

The ancient town of Ghadames is one of the oldest cities in the Sahara and an outstanding example of traditional vernacular architecture, as well as a model of traditional gathering places. Its architectural features include different functions for each level of the buildings. A typical residence has at least two floors, with living quarters on the upper floors, storage rooms on the ground floor, and a basement with maze-like, winding passages below. The ground floor is used for storing supplies, while above the dark and enclosed passageways, another protruding level forms a network of corridors. The outdoor platforms are specifically designed for women. The dwellings in Ghadames use very primitive building materials, such as adobe walls, wooden structures, and palm wood doors and windows, yet they create a highly distinctive architectural style.
