The Jianmen Shu Road Scenic Area is located in the Mianyang region of Sichuan Province. It lies among the continuous ranges of the Qinling, Bashan, and Minshan Mountains, and is a scenic area connected by the “Shu Road.” In 1982, it was designated as one of the first national key scenic areas.

The “Shu Road” is an ancient plank road that entered Sichuan from Hanzhong and Ningqiang in Shaanxi, extending to Guangyuan, Jiange, and Zitong, stretching over 150 kilometers. The terrain along the route is rugged and the scenery is majestic. Numerous historical sites are scattered along the “Shu Road,” including the Chaotian Pass Plank Road, relics of the ancient Three Kingdoms battlefields, the Huangze Temple (built for Empress Wu Zetian), the Qingfoyan cliff carvings from the Tang and Song dynasties, Jianmen Pass, the ancient Cuipeng Corridor post road, the Qiqu Mountain Temple, and the hometown of Li Bai. It is a “tourist hotspot” rich in both natural landscapes and cultural-historical landmarks.

Jianmen Pass features 72 undulating peaks, sharp and towering like swords piercing the sky. Historically known as “Liangshan” or “Jianshan,” it served as the northern shield of Shu and the throat of Western Sichuan, often hailed as the “Most Impregnable Pass Under Heaven.” It has long been a contested military site and holds high strategic value. The main peak, Dajianshan Mountain, stands at an elevation of 1,200 meters and is home to the ancient Liangshan Temple, built during the Song Dynasty. Along the way, visitors can enjoy views of the Shimen Pass, Shisun Peak, Chuandongliang, Fairy Bridge, and Shesheng Cliff.

Huangze Temple is located to the west of Guangyuan City. Originally named “Wunu Temple” and also called “Chuanzhu Temple,” it was later renamed “Huangze Temple” because Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty was born in Guangyuan. The current temple structure dates back to the Qing Dynasty and includes attractions such as the Grand Buddha Tower, Zetian Hall, Little South Sea, Five Buddha Pavilion, and Lüzu Pavilion. Zetian Hall houses a stone-carved seated statue of Wu Zetian. The middle-level grottoes preserve 1,203 statues from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Song periods, featuring flying apsaras in various poses—an exquisite example of ancient sculptural art.

The Chaotian Pass Plank Road is a famous remnant of the ancient Shu Road between Sichuan and Shaanxi. The Chaotian Pass features steep mountains and rapid waters, with Qingfeng Gorge to the north and Mingyue Gorge below. On the cliffs of the two gorges, three tiers of stone holes can be seen—upper, middle, and lower. Wooden beams were placed through the middle-tier holes as supports, with wooden planks laid on top to form the path. The lower-tier holes held supporting beams, while the upper-tier ones supported rain-shielding boards. Both sections of the plank road are well-preserved, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the ancient Shu Road’s grandeur described as “flying beams spanning cliffs, plank roads connecting perilous ridges.”

The Cuipeng Corridor lines both sides of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Highway, with ancient cypresses lining the path, creating a uniform green hue. Known as a “Wonder of the Shu Road,” these ancient trees are thick enough to hug, resembling wisps of blue smoke. Some lean against cliffs, others stand atop mountains, and some line the roadside, forming a shaded “Emerald Corridor.”

Location: The Jianmen Ancient Shu Road centers around the ancient city of Jiange, extending north to Chaotian Gorge (also known as Mingyue Gorge) in Chaotian Town, Chaoyang District, and south to Yanwu Town, Zitong County, Mianyang City, covering a total distance of over 200 kilometers.
