Baogong Temple in Zhaoqing
Baogong Temple in Zhaoqing is situated in the western part of the city and is a complex of structures built in the architectural style of the Song Dynasty. In addition to the memorial archway and mountain gate, it features a main hall, east and west side halls, a bell tower, a drum tower, pavilions, corridors, and a well. Covering an area of 11,500 square meters, it is among the largest of all Baogong Temples and also showcases the characteristics and style of ancient Lingnan architecture. The temple was built to commemorate Bao Zheng, a renowned statesman of the Song Dynasty. During his three-year tenure as the prefect of Duanzhou (present-day Zhaoqing), Bao Zheng governed with integrity, undertook significant projects for the public good, and greatly benefited the people of Duanzhou. When he left office, he reportedly did not take even a single inkstone with him. His outstanding achievements earned him deep respect and admiration from the local populace. As early as the Song Dynasty, the people erected the Baogong Temple to honor this upright official, and some even deified him, hoping for his divine protection to help them overcome misfortune.
