In the past, copra and vanilla products were the mainstays of the local economy, but today tourism dominates, with the island’s beaches being especially famous. La Digue exudes a strong tropical charm and simple local customs, giving visitors the feeling of being in a paradise on earth. It has thus been listed by Lonely Planet as one of the 50 places everyone should visit in their lifetime. The island’s Anse Source d’Argent beach is renowned across Europe and is absolutely one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, as well as one of the most photographed. The beach features uniquely beautiful rock formations.
Grand Anse Beach boasts stretches of fine golden sand and water as clear and jade-like as can be. The Loutier Coco restaurant on the beach is a favorite dining spot among visitors. Motorized vehicles are limited on the island; bicycles are the most commonly used means of transport, and if you have the time, a ox cart ride is the perfect choice.
