Mount Eden

Introduction Mount Eden is an extinct volcano, formed 20,000–30,000 years ago. At 196 meters high, it is the tallest in Auckland’s volcanic field and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The lava erupted from the volcano covered nearly 6 square kilometers, including what is now the Newmarket area. The volume of lava ejected was as much as 160 million cubic meters—enough to fill 32,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Transportation It is located about 5 kilometers south of central Auckland.
