The “registry of the world’s newspapers” boasts a collection of over 170,000 newspapers and printed materials, including many first issues, final editions, and commemorative special editions of international newspapers. There are also numerous rare treasures, such as the world’s largest and smallest newspapers, early handwritten rarities, and German newspapers filled with humor, satire, and amusing headlines. The collection focuses on newspapers from 1848/49, Jewish newspapers in Europe during the 19th century, German-language newspapers in North America from 1839 to 1930, and newspapers from the German Empire and East Germany. After 1945, sections featuring wartime and battlefield newspapers from both World Wars were added.
The International Newspaper Museum also has a press science library with around 3,000 volumes. Since 1996, an electronic database has been available, and the media room allows every visitor to access the internet. Additionally, visitors can read domestic and international daily and weekly newspapers here, and exhibitions on various themes are held irregularly.
