Corcovado

  Introduction

At the summit of Corcovado Mountain near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there stands a massive 30-meter-tall stone statue of Jesus Christ—the largest of its kind in the world. In 1921, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence, it was proposed to erect a giant statue of Jesus Christ atop Corcovado, with the Savior opening His outstretched arms to embrace the city. Construction began that year, and after ten years of painstaking work, the statue was finally completed and unveiled on Corcovado in 1931.

The immense statue weighs 200 tons, with the distance between its outstretched hands measuring 23 meters. The figure of Jesus Christ, draped in flowing robes, stands with arms wide open, gazing affectionately over the stunning panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro below—a symbol of compassion and a tribute to independence. Facing the shimmering Atlantic Ocean, the statue’s open arms form a colossal cross when viewed from afar, lending it an air of solemnity and majesty. The figure of Jesus blends harmoniously with the surrounding mountains, while drifting clouds occasionally drift among the peaks, giving the statue an ethereal, mysterious, and sacred presence. Towering atop this high mountain, the grand statue is visible from most parts of the city, both day and night, making it the most iconic landmark of Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s most famous cities.
