It is the best vantage point for enjoying sea views, sunrises, and sunsets. From the mountaintop, you can overlook the entire city and Xiaodonghai area. At night, taking photos with the illuminated Luhuitou as a backdrop along Sanya Bay is highly recommended. Luhuitou Park is designed as a theme park that emphasizes both love culture and ecological display.
Love Culture
The main attraction, the “Luhuitou” sculpture, was built based on a beautiful Li ethnic love legend. Standing 15 meters tall, it is the tallest sculpture on Hainan Island and has become an iconic city sculpture of Sanya, earning the city the nickname “Deer City.” Visiting Luhuitou is a must-do in Sanya, as it inspires boundless sweet fantasies about love.
Other love culture attractions include the carved “Love” character on the cliff, the “Eternal Union” platform, “Heart-Locking” locks, the “Couple Trees,” the “Fairy Deer Tree,” the “Sea Will Never Wither Stone,” the “Matchmaker” statue, and the “Eternal Love” stone carving. During the annual Tianya Haijiao International Wedding Festival, couples flock here to pledge their love and commit to a lifetime together.
Ecological Display
Luhuitou Park is at the heart of the natural forest vegetation reserve in downtown Sanya. It features a lush evergreen tropical monsoon rainforest ecosystem with a rich diversity of plant species, including many national and Hainan Province endemic species. Additionally, the park has established a Li ethnic folk culture corridor, a “Rose Embrace” area styled like a traditional Li village, a stage for Li ethnic song and dance performances, as well as Li totem stone carvings such as the “Harvest Picture,” showcasing the vibrant customs and traditions of the Li people.
The Beautiful Love Legend:
Legend has it that in ancient times, a young Li man chased a beautiful deer from the Wuzhi Mountains to the shores of the South China Sea. With cliffs ahead and the endless ocean beyond, the deer had nowhere to go. Just as the young man was about to draw his bow, a flash of light appeared, smoke rose into the sky, and the deer suddenly turned its head—transforming into a beautiful Li maiden under a halo of nine colors. Deeply moved, the young man fell in love with her, and the two were married and settled down together. This mountain was thus named “Luhuitou” (Deer Turning Its Head). This story is one of China’s three great minority love legends, alongside “Ashima” from Yunnan and “Liu Sanjie” from Guangxi.
Transportation:
1. Take a taxi from downtown (5 RMB to the base, 5–8 RMB to the top).
2. Take bus No. 2 from the long-distance bus station (either the “Dadonghai to Civil Aviation” or “TianDu” line) to the Luhuitou stop (1 RMB), then take a tricycle up to the scenic area entrance (about 2 RMB).
