Sacred Lake
A natural lake formed by a volcanic eruption, it is a place of worship for Hindu devotees in Mauritius. Sacred Lake (Grand Bassin) is located in the southern part of Mauritius, near Mareaux Vacoas, and is regarded as sacred by the local people. Nestled between two green hills, the lake is said to have been named after a missionary sprinkled holy water brought from Europe into its waters, thus giving it the name “Sacred Lake.” It is a natural crater lake formed by volcanic activity. The area is home to one of Mauritius’s most famous Hindu temples, which is also the largest of its kind outside India. As a result, it serves as a key pilgrimage site for Hindus in Mauritius, especially during the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, when celebrations are particularly grand. The surrounding hills and vegetation are reflected in the lake’s emerald-green waters, creating a serene and picturesque scene.
