Chongxia Pagoda

Chongxia Pagoda is situated atop Tazi Mountain in Wenhuan Village, approximately 3 kilometers east of the county town. It is a hexagonal white pagoda of the pavilion style, constructed in the sixth year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1626). The pagoda has nine stories in total, with each side of the first story measuring 3.3 meters in width. The structure reaches an overall height of about 25 meters. Except for the base and the columns of the first story, which are made of stone, the remaining eight stories are built with specially made large bricks. The lower five stories have a central column, and each level features small inner chambers with niches in the chamber walls that house statues. Between the pagoda body and its columns, brick staircases allow visitors to walk around and ascend. The upper five stories are built with interlocking bricks, allowing climbers to reach the iron bridge at the top to enjoy panoramic views of the landscape. Each side of the pagoda’s stories is equipped with windows. The main gates on the front of the first to seventh stories bear brick inscriptions such as “Chongxia Pagoda,” “Wenlan Bathed in Reflection,” “Upright Amidst Five Clouds,” and “Golden Hall Dew.” “Lofty Pagoda Hill” is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Cangxi County Town. On April 8, 1983, the county government designated it as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. Due to years of neglect, the pagoda’s top developed cracks, and the structure leaned slightly northward. In 1986, the county government allocated funds to dismantle the top two stories, rebuild them according to the original design, carry out repairs and reinforcement, and repaint both the interior and exterior. On July 8, 1988, the Guangyuan Municipal Government listed it as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. The area surrounding the pagoda is lush with trees and forms a continuous scenic area with the Red Army Crossing site and Wudang Mountain, making it a popular leisure destination for residents of Cangxi County and its surrounding areas.
