The discovery of Golden Bay has a long history: In 1642, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman arrived here, but his fleet clashed with local Māori upon landing, prompting him to name it Murderers Bay; French explorer Jules Dumont later renamed it Massacre Bay; in 1840, coal was discovered here, leading some to call it Coal Bay; eventually, gold was found in the Collingwood area, and it was renamed Golden Bay.
Golden Bay boasts some of New Zealand’s most renowned beaches. With minimal development, it retains an unspoiled charm and stunning scenery. Moreover, Golden Bay is world-famous for its ocean sunsets. Sitting on the beach at dusk, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon, then enjoying the sea breeze and listening to the waves is an incredibly relaxing experience.
